Gusties sweep Knights to put damper on Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team closed out the home portion of the 2023 campaign by dropping a pair of games to MIAC co-leader Gustavus Adolphus College. The visitors claimed the first contest 6-0 and won game two by an 8-3 margin.

Wednesday was also Senior Day at Mel Taube Field, and a post-game ceremony honored the six baseball players that are members of the Class of 2023: Aaron Berkowitz (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School), Michael Berler (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School), Nick Fitzhugh (Sr./Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce), Ben Jeweler (Sr./Seattle, Wash./Garfield), Luke Mager (Sr./Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley), and AJ Staff (Sr./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge).

"I'm very proud of the energy the Knights have been showing up to the ballpark with, day in and day out," said Carleton head coach Alec Holcomb. "Thank you so much to the amazing senior class for showing what it means to be a Carleton student-athlete."

Game 1 Recap
Gustavus Adolphus 6, Carleton 0
A trio of Carleton (5-20, 1-13) pitchers limited a Gustavus (21-10, 12-2 MIAC) squad that paces MIAC teams this season in hits, runs, and home runs to only six hits in the contest.

Despite having only one hit in the frame, the Gusties scored three times in the third inning thanks to a trio of walks, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI groundout.

Gustavus added a run in the fifth and benefitted from a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Carleton had baserunners in five of the seven innings but the offense went only 1-for-12 with runners on base as Mitch Casperson tossed a five-hit shutout for Gustavus.

Sam Chutkow (Fy./Needham, Mass./Needham) was the lone Knight with a multi-hit performance, collecting two of the team's five singles

Game 2 Recap
Gustavus Adolphus 8, Carleton 3
The Knights grabbed the early lead, pushing across two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sam Zacks (So./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) was hit by a pitch and later scored on Chutkow's single. With two down in the frame, Chutkow scored when John Hurtubise (Fy./Marysville, Mich./Marysville) continued his hot hitting with a line drive single to right field.

Gustavus batted around in the fourth inning, plating five runs with three of those coming with two out. The visitors found some insurance tallies after plating another trio of two-out runs in the eighth inning.

Ananth Iyer (So./Redmond, Wash./Overlake) had a one-out double in the ninth inning and raced home on Nathan Barnhart's (Fy./Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) single.

Iyer went 2-for-2 off the bench to pace the Knights

Up Next for the Knights
The current schedule includes nine more games—all on the road—for Carleton, beginning with a doubleheader at Hamline University on Saturday, April 29.
