ORLANDO, Fla. – The Carleton College men's tennis team wrapped up its time at the USTA National Campus with a 6-3 victory over Trinity College (Conn.) The Knights went 3-1 during spring break and improved to 10-2 on the season.
"This was one of our strongest slates of opponents ever on a spring break trip," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel, "and to fight this hard and produce a winning record says a lot about the talent and competitiveness of our team."
The Knights' strength in doubles play earned them an early 2-1 lead.
Tarm Rojanasoonthon (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) and
Tate Fuller (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) won 8-6 at No 1. Doubles, while
Yuv Kataria (Jr./Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) and
Aniketh Vipparla (Jr./Cary, N.C./Green Hope) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at the third slot.
The singles results were close, with each side wining two matches in straight sets and the other two contests requiring super tiebreakers. Fuller's comeback after losing the first set (2-6, 6-4, 10-7) at No. 2 singles, helped shift the singles momentum into the Knights' favor.
"After dropping that first set and being down a quick break in the second, I thought Tate was buried," said Zweifel. "But never bet against a Honey Badger when they are cornered."
Ozzie Viswanathan (Sr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) clinched match with a third set tiebreaker of his own, edging his No. 4 singles opponent by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 tally.
While Trinity (3-5) secured wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 spots. Kataria and
Cooper Kline (Fy./Los Angeles, Calif./The Buckley School) both prevailed by 6-2, 7-5 margins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectfully, for Carleton.
