WINONA, Minn. – The No. 37-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team took part in its first match in more than four months but showed no signs of rust as the Knights cruised to an 8-1 victory at Saint Mary's University.
The Knights (5-0, 3-0 MIAC) swept doubles in convincing fashion.
Mariam Nechiporuk (So./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) and
Ingrid Smith (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) registered an 8-1 win at the No. 1 slot, while
Alise Pedersen (Sr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) and
Miriam Shteyman (So./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) notched an 8-2 result at the second spot.
Piper Brown (So./Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Porter-Gaud) and
Zoe Rose (So./Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) shutout their opponents at No. 3 doubles.
The Knights continued to dominate during singles play. Smith and Brown blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, to secure the team victory.
Pederson followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles, while Shteyman notched a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in her collegiate match playing at No. 1 singles. Rose came out on top in the most dramatic match of the day, edging her foe at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (12-10) tally.
