OWATONNA, Minn. – The No. 37-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team improved to 6-0 on the season after recording an 8-1 triumph over University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Knights won 2 of the 3 doubles matches. After UWEC's nationally-ranked tandem of Clare Palen and Samantha Fuchs captured the No. 1 doubles match by an 8-2 tally, Carleton's
Ingrid Smith (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) and
Mariam Nechiporuk (So./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) evened the team score with a matching 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
Alise Pedersen (Sr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) and
Miriam Shteyman (So./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) added an 8-5 triumph at the third slot.
All six singles matches went in the Knights' column, but three of those contests went to super tiebreakers.
Amelia Asfaw (So./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) quickly dispatched Fuchs at No. 2 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Nechiporuk followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the third spot.
Mary Hose (Jr./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) clinched the match for the Knights with a win atop the lineup. She rallied after dropping the opening set and avenged her No. 1 doubles setback with the 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) result over Palen.
Zoe Rose (So./Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) chipped in a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 doubles, before Shteyman and Smith accounted for super-tiebreaker wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Shteyman came out on top 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) while Smith registered the 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory.
