Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

4-0 Knights conclude fall slate with wins over UW-Superior and Concordia

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule with a pair of victories on Sunday, topping University of Wisconsin-Superior by a 6-3 tally and Concordia College-Moorhead by an 8-1 margin.

With the triumphs, the Knights head into the offseason with a 4-0 ledger.

Carleton 6, UW-Superior 3
The Knights swept their first two fall matches, so they found themselves in unfamiliar territory after dropping 2 of 3 doubles matches to the Yellow Jackets (1-1). Carleton responded by winning 5 of the 6 singles matches to claim the team victory.

Yuv Kataria and Baiyun Jing salvaged the Knights' lone doubles victory, prevailing 8-4 at the second slot.

"After watching us go down 1-2 after doubles, I had the helpless feeling of being trapped at Burning Man festival," said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. "But credit to the guys for roaring back in singles to take the match against a very talented UW-Superior team."

Aniketh Vipparla quickly claimed a 6-3, 6-0 result at No. 6 singles to level the match, with Jasper Yang then winning 6-2, 6-4 at the fourth spot.

UWS evened the team score with a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles, but Carleton inched back in front when Cooper Kline finished off a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the third slot.

Both Kataria and Jing captured their respective first sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles by identical 7-5 scores, with the former closing out his match 6-4 and the latter 6-2.

Carleton 8, Concordia 1
The Knights improved to 3-0 versus MIAC competition, in part to the play of Kenton Young, who made his first appearance of the season with triumphs in both singles and doubles. In each case, his match was the first to conclude.

"Kenton made quite an impact in his Carleton Men's Tennis debut," said Zweifel. "Watching him compete made me realize that while there are moralists among us, there are also those who just want to get the job done quickly and go to dinner."

Young and Jack Rivkin secured an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, while Kataria and Jing added an 8-3 decision atop the lineup to give the Knights a 2-1 lead heading into singles where Carleton swept the six solo matches.

Young claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 triumph by Vipparla at the fifth spot. Jasper Yang won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, finishing ahead of his brother Jerome Yang, who notched a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the fourth slot in the lineup.

Kline played No. 1 singles for the first time in his career and picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Rivkin completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 result at No. 3 singles.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will step away from competition until the indoor season gets underway in January.
