No. 7 Knights clinch playoff berth with 4-0 win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four different players scored as the No. 7-ranked Carleton College men's soccer team handled Hamline University by a 4-0 tally. The victory took Carleton to 13-1-0 on the season (6-1-0 MIAC), which is tied for the seventh-most wins in a season in program history. Additionally, Carleton clinched a berth in the MIAC Playoffs for the 16th consecutive time, extending the Knights' MIAC record.

Carleton improved to 8-0 on the road this fall, and now has 18 points in the standings, guaranteeing the Knights will finish among the conference's top six squads. There are three MIAC games remaining, so Carleton can still finish anywhere from the No. 1 to the No. 6 seed.

The Knights spoiled Senior Day for the Pipers (6-4-2, 2-4-2 MIAC) as Carleton found the back of the net four times in the opening 25 minutes to glide to its fourth straight victory and MIAC-leading 10th clean sheet.

The Knights brought their scoring boots to St. Paul, getting off to a flier when Trevor Jones slung a ball forward for his brother Blake Jones only 75 seconds into the game. The younger Jones ran onto the ball off the shoulder of a defender and chipped past the keeper to open the scoring.

The Carleton lead was doubled in the 11th minute as Riaz Kelly careened up from his right-back position to win a ball in the Hamline third. The Knights worked it to Owen Flanagan at the top of the 18, who clipped the ball to Ben Pennell inside the box. Pennell's low shot took a wild deflection off a lunging Hamline defender and looped over the helpless goalkeeper for Pennell's 11th goal of the season and ninth in the last eight games. That tally of 11 goals is tied for sixth in single-season scoring in recorded Knights men's soccer history. Additionally, Pennell is now tied for most goals scored by a MIAC player this season.

Carleton widened the margin to 3-0 in the 21st minute as Justin Crawmer followed up a period of Knights pressure by driving to the byline, beating his defender, and chopping a delivery across the face of goal.  The ball eluded Hamline defenders and fell to Briggs Priem, who knocked home the finish for his sixth goal on the campaign.

The Knights continued their first half rampage, as in the 24th minute Pennell spun through a pair of Pipers at the halfway line to kickstart a counterattack. He drew the Hamline right back toward him, springing Flanagan free on the flank. Pennell laid it wide, and Flanagan took two touches before curling in goal number four for Carleton.

After the first half concluded without further drama, Crawmer nearly got into the scoring column in the 55th minute, as he rocketed a shot off the far goalpost. That would prove to be the best chance for either side in the second half.

Carleton had 28 shots on the afternoon, the third-most in any MIAC game this season, with 13 of those attempts on goal. Hamline had only two tries overall and both were off frame.

The solid play of the Carleton backline meant that Daniel Linder was not required to make any saves as he eased to his seventh clean sheet.

The Knights' four-goal day was their sixth game of four or more goals this season, the most in one year for the Knights since 2012, when they notched seven such games.

Up Next for the Knights
The Knights return to Bell Field to face third-place Augsburg University at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
