NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 4-ranked Carleton College men's soccer team unleashed 32 shots in the game but was unable to find the net and settled for a 0-0 draw with Augsburg University.
Augsburg (7-3-5, 3-0-4 MIAC) opened the contest on the front foot, with Ceazar Daniell offering the first shot of the game in the fifth minute, and Mitchel Munzing authoring the best Auggie chance of the first half only four minutes later, dribbling into the box and clipping a low shot, but
Daniel Linder, who is second in NCAA Division III with a 0.261 goals against average, made the first of his six saves in the match.
Fresh off earning the highest national ranking in program history earlier in the day, the Knights (13-1-1, 6-1-1 MIAC) found the woodwork unforgiving three times in the opening stanza. In the 15th minute, the first Carleton opportunity arose, with
Owen Flanagan laying a cross in for
Jonathan Vonderlage, who clanged a header off the crossbar.
Briggs Priem knocked another header towards the goal but was denied by the crossbar for a second time. Carleton would be stymied by the woodwork once again when
Justin Crawmer pinged a shot off the crossbar in the 25th minute.
For the most part, the Knights commanded the contest as the two teams spent 67 percent of the match in Carleton's attacking half.
The hosts owned an 11-4 edge in shots during the first period and opened the second half on a mission, lashing 11 shots in the first 15 minutes of the frame. The most threatening of those tries came in the 46th minute as
Blake Jones played a perfect ball from the right flank, curling directly into the path of
Ben Pennell, who tipped his shot towards goal. The shot eluded Augsburg goalkeeper Oscar Herrera, but centerback Drew Collins made an incredible goal-line clearance to keep Carleton off the scoreboard.
Despite predominantly Carleton possession, Augsburg offered a couple chances, one being MIAC assists leader Mizael Harris cracking a high shot that Linder made a leaping save on in the 66th minute.
The Knights would not find the goal they were searching for, as another fantastic chance was left unfinished in minute 84. Off a corner kick, the ball fell up top to Priem, who fired in low. Flanagan redirected the ball on goal, but Herrera flashed out a leg to make the initial save, and Flanagan's follow up sailed high. A few more shots went high or wide in the closing minutes to wrap up the scoreless draw.
Carleton's 32-shot tally was the most by any team in a MIAC conference game this season. Augsburg had only eight shots but directed six of them on goal. Carleton also had all six of the corners in the game.
Carleton's backline limited dangerous chances, as Linder's six saves were mostly simple ones. Linder's safe hands notched him his eighth solo shutout, and Carleton's 11th overall. Both of those numbers lead the MIAC.
The draw brings Carleton into a tie with St. Olaf at the top of the MIAC table with 19 points, but the Oles have one one game in hand.
