NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Amelia Solt (Fy./Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) accounted for a game-high 22 points, but the Carleton College women's basketball team absorbed a heartbreaking 64-61 setback to visiting College of Saint Benedict. The back-and-forth contest that featured seven ties and 14 lead changes.
"We came up a possession short in a great MIAC battle tonight," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "There are lots of positives to take into another game on Wednesday."
Carleton (4-9, 3-8 MIAC) saw its two-game win streak stopped despite 13 points and a team-high six rebounds for
Emma Henry (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and a 10-point effort from
Aiana Whitfield (Sr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's).
Leading a trio of Saint Benedict (10-4, 7-4 MIAC) players in double figures, Sophia Jonas accounted for a team-high 20 points, including a season-best 6-of-9 showing from beyond the arc. Carla Meyer added 14 points and six assists while Olivia Boily finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Bennies snapped a brief two-game slide and moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the MIAC standings.
Carleton led 17-11 after the first quarter, thanks in part to eight points from Henry and six for Sol, who notched her third game of at least 20 points this season.
The lead changed hands seven times during the second quarter with a Jonas' triple giving he Bennies a 30-28 lead at halftime.
The second half of the game started with several key plays from Solt, who drained a 3-pointer to begin the scoring. She tallied 12 points in the period, one that saw the teams knotted at 49-49 heading into the final stanza.
The back-and-forth play continued through must of the fourth quarter. Down 56-53 in the middle of the frame,
Selma Vangstein (So./Oslo, Norway/Nydalen) hit a 3-pointer to level the score.
Jasmine Choi (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) tied the game one final time at 58-58 after a layup with 1:35 still on the clock. After free throws from both sides, Carleton had the ball with 0:09 remaining, but a bid to send the game to overtime was off the mark.
Carleton finished with a 12-6 advantage in points off turnovers, but the Bennies finished with a 42-20 edge in rebounding, including 16 offensive boards leading to a 13-2 margin in second-chance points.
