NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Guards
Aiana Whitfield (Sr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) and
Emma Henry (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) both had double-doubles in helping lead the Carleton College women's basketball team to a 64-58 victory over Macalester College. Four Knights finished in double figures, paced by
Jasmine Choi's (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) 16-point performance.
Whitfield's first career double-double included 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Henry notched her fourth double-double of the year, this one an 11-point, 12-board stat line.
Amelia Solt (Fy./Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) was the other Knight in double figures, collecting 12 points with three steals and two assists.
Bella Thomas (So./Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) tallied eight points along with eight rebounds, with both totals matching her career highs.
"Today's game was a total team effort," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "We had some critical contributions off the bench, and the players executed adjustments in the second half that were necessary for us to pick up the win. We need to recover well and be ready for another battle on Monday."
Carleton (4-8, 3-7 MIAC) raced out to a 9-3 lead early in the first frame, but the Scots (4-9, 3-7 MIAC) responded with a 7-0 run and eventually led 13-12 at the end of opening quarter.
The Knights started the second quarter with buckets by Solt and Thomas to earn a 16-13 lead, but Macalester put together a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to move back in front. The Scots built their largest lead of the contest at 30-22 with 30 seconds remaining in the first half, but Solt drained a 3-pointer shortly before the halftime buzzer, giving Carleton some energy going into the second half.
The Knights began the third quarter with an 8-2 run, but the middle of the frame saw the lead change hands five times in addition to three ties as neither team could open up a significant advantage. Carleton held a slim 40-39 lead heading into the last ten minutes of play.
Neither side fared well from beyond the arc until the fourth quarter. That's when the Knights saw key 3-pointers from Henry and
Selma Vangstein (So./Oslo, Norway/Nydalen) as they opened up a 52-43 lead midway through the period.
The Carleton advantage grew as large as 11 at 57-46 with 3:14 still to play, but Macalester put together a late rally behind triples by Maia Pedrosa and Caitlin Panos during the final 33 seconds of play. The Knights iced the victory by going 7-of-8 at the line in the final minute.
Peyton Starks finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Macalester, which shot 42 percent overall but was only 4-of-21 (19 percent) beyond the arc.
Carleton shot 36 percent overall and went 4-of-22 from downtown, but the Knights corralled a season-best 17 offensive rebounds leading to an 18-7 edge in second-chance points.
