GRINNELL, Iowa --- Despite rainy weather and a soggy field, the Carleton College women's soccer team shined bright on Saturday, notching a 4-0 non-conference victory at Grinnell College.
Hadley Twichell (Fy./Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored a brace while
Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) added her first collegiate goal.
Â
"Such a great team win in tough conditions," said Carleton head coach
Jessica Mueller. "The heavy rain did not phase this group at all. The first half was a little sloppy, but things came together for us as we continued to both defend well and move the ball quickly. Exciting for us to get a shutout and execute our chances. Lots of tough games ahead as conference play starts. I think we're on the right track, and this group is committed to getting better every day."
Â
Carleton (3-1-0) took the lead in the ninth minute. The Knights won a 50-50 ball in the midfield and sprang
Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) with a long pass. The defender cut her off, so the junior cut back to the inside and poked a shot under Grinnell goalkeeper Elinor Arneson. It was MacVeagh's team-best fourth score of the season, and the first goal allowed by the Pioneers this fall.
Â
The Knights doubled their lead when Krese scored in the 55th minute. Arneson stopped an initial Carleton shot from distance but the ball bounced away. Krese was first to the loose ball and powered it home.
Â
Twichell cashed in from long range in the 65th minute. She collected a cross and fired a 30-yard shot that sailed beyond the outstretched arms of the Arneson and inside the far post.
Â
Ninety seconds later Twichell found the back of the net again. This time, with a well-timed run through the Pioneer backline that left her one-on-one with the keeper.
Â
All told, Carleton finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. The four goals were the most by the Knights since a 7-2 triumph over St. Olaf College on Oct. 30, 2019.
Â
Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) registered a pair of saves for Carleton and notched her fourth career shutout.
