Knights blank Auggies, sit alone atop MIAC standings

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In a battle of the final two remaining schools undefeated in MIAC play, the Carleton College women's soccer team traveled to the Twin Cities to face Augsburg University and came out the victor, by a score of 3-0.

The Knights (8-1-0, 4-0-0 MIAC) got on the board early and often, with all three goals coming in the first half.

In the fifth minute Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) crossed a clearance attempt to an unmarked Hadley Twichell (Fy./Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), who volleyed the pass into the upper left corner. In the 10th minute Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) reclaimed sole possession of the conference lead in goals with her seventh tally of the season on an unassisted effort, as she eluded a pair of Auggie defenders in the box before beating the keeper. In the 28th minute, MacVeagh sent a beautiful corner kick into the box, finding the head of Ashlyn Haigh (Fy./Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) at the back post. Haigh, who has started every game for the Knights, became the sixth first-year to score this season for the team.

In the second half the sides traded blows, but neither was able to get anything in the net.

Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) made five saves and picked up her seventh win and third shutout of the season.

Augsburg (6-4-0, 3-1-0 MIAC) managed to match the Knights in shots with 14, but many were long range prayers from outside the box that either sailed wide or were easily handled by Mookencherry.

Carleton now has sole possesion of first place in the conference standings and has outscored its opponents 22-3 during their current six-game win streak.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton hopes to stay hot against crosstown foe St. Olaf College this weekend. Kickoff between the Knights and Oles is set for 1:00 p.m. at Bell Field on Saturday, Oct. 1.
