Knights rally past St. Olaf, 3-1, to stay unbeaten in MIAC play

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Rookies Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) and Ashlyn Haigh (Fy./Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) played their first-ever game against crosstown rival St. Olaf College on a picturesque Northfield Saturday, and the Oles might wish they never play against them again.

Haigh and Kresse accounted for all the Carleton (9-1-0, 5-0-0 MIAC) goals in a 3-1 comeback victory, netting the team their seventh straight triumph overall and a 5-0 start to MIAC play. Carleton controlled play for the majority of the match, putting seven shots on goal to St. Olaf's four. The Oles struck first, but the Knights scored a trio of unanswered goals to earn the three points in the conference standings.

"I'm really happy for the team," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "After a slow first half, we made some good adjustments to St. Olaf's high defensive line, timed our runs properly, played the ball quicker, and executed."

The first goal of the match came in the 15th minute when the Oles' Tessa Anderson was played into the box and went down, drawing a penalty. St. Olaf's leading goal scorer on the season, Sadie Klassen, converted by placing a right-footed shot past the fingertips of a diving Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and into the bottom right corner of the net.

Only nine minutes later, the Knights earned a corner kick from the right flag, and Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) looped a ball into the Ole six-yard box. There, a mad scramble ensued that resulted in Haigh knocking the loose ball into the roof of the net to tie the game. That was Haigh's second goal in two games.

Carleton was unable to push another goal past St. Olaf keeper Maddie Black during the first half, but it did not take long after the break for the Knights to break the deadlock. In the 48th minute, Anna Borkowski (Fy./South Bend, Ind./John Adams) played an inch-perfect ball into the path of a Kresse run, and she finished in style by lashing a shot into the top right corner from 18 yards out.

Kresse wasn't done, though. In the 56th minute MacVeagh sent her fellow forward a through ball that Kresse knocked past a diving Ole defender and onto her left foot, where she tucked a neat finish past the keeper.

The Knights would command the final 30 minutes of the match, ending a day where a solid defensive performance required only three saves out of Mookencherry en route to her eighth triumph in net.

Carleton has won seven straight games, which is their longest unbeaten streak since 2011. Their nine total wins matches the program's highest win total since 2014.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will test their unbeaten MIAC status at conference opponent Bethel University next weekend, kicking off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Arden Hills, Minn.
