Knights battle Colorado College to a 1-1 result

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - In the final leg of a three-game non-conference set, the Carleton College men's soccer team played visiting Colorado College to a 1-1 draw on Bell Field. Jonathan Vonderlage's (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) first career goal was the equalizer for the Knights'  (3-3-2) offense.

Regionally ranked Colorado College (4-4-2) was on a two-game tour of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, having defeated Concordia College-Moorhead, 4-1, two days prior.

Carleton fired the first two shots of the match on their guests, but it was the Tigers who drew first blood. In the 20th minute, it was a slide tackle which quickly stopped a Knights' counter-attack and sparked a much more dangerous chance for Colorado. Tigers points leader Sajji Singh led a three-on-two attack down the left flank, and with the numbers on their side, the pass to Alex Meyerhoff was too easy for the Carleton defense to stop.

Carleton pressed high in the closing minutes of the first half and finally found home with barely a minute to spare. In the 44th minute, Jon Fernandes (Jr./Woodbury, Conn./Canterbury School) found a streaking Vonderlage down the left side. The first-year fullback took it the rest of the way into the box and fired a beauty with his right foot into the back of the net for the unassisted tally.

While both teams had plenty of chances and a few shots on goal each in the second period, neither were able to capitalize. Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) made four saves on the afternoon for the Knights.

Carleton led the Tigers in shots 10-8 and corner kicks 7-1.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads back into the thick of the MIAC schedule to face regionally-ranked Augsburg University under the lights in the Twin Cities. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
