Knights rally in the second half, defeat Concordia 3-1

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team scored three times over the final 30 minutes of play to erase a one-goal deficit and notch its fifth consecutive victory, this one a 3-1 result at Concordia College-Moorhead. The Knights improve to 7-1-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in MIAC action.

"Concordia was ready for us today," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "They were well organized and made it really difficult for us to find a rhythm and score. With patience and some big-time leadership from some of our veterans, we got it done. I'm super proud of the team's grit. Coming from behind in the MIAC isn't easy."

The Knights outshot Concordia (3-3-1, 0-2-1 MIAC) by a 14-3 margin in the first half, but a 38th-minute conversion by Grace Lawlar was the difference across the opening stanza.

The Knights and their electric offense, with a +14 goal differential entering play, would not be turned away easily, and they proved that in the second half.

Rainey Tilley (Sr./South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) netted her second goal of the season in the 61st minute. Carleton took the ball to the end line and a perfectly slotted ball found Tilley on a run to the back post for a goal.

Less than ten minutes later, Piper Dean (So./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) converted a penalty kick, good for her second tally—and first game-winner—of the 2022 campaign.

In the 78th minute, Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) slotted a through ball to Riley Gibson (Fy./Boise, Idaho/Boise) making a well-time run that put the former on a breakaway. Gibson calmly put it past the keeper for a key insurance tally and the first goal of her collegiate career.

Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) registered a pair of saves in the first half, while Nia Terry (Fy./Los Angeles, Calif./LACES) blanked the Cobbers in the second half with three saves of her own to pick up the win in net.

Overall, Carleton outshot Concordia 22-9 on the afternoon, with 10 shots on goal. It was the fifth time the Knights have fired 20 or more shots against their opponents this season, and the third time in a row.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton travels to Augsburg University for a 7:30 p.m. clash on Tuesday, Sept. 27. They are the only remaining teams undefeated in MIAC play this season, and both squads are regionally ranked by the United Soccer Coaches.
