Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eryk Jones '23

Knights continue to roll, pour in five more against Cornell

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - In a game that incited feelings of deja vu to just the day before, the Carleton College women's soccer team posted their second 5-1 victory of the weekend, this time with a triumph over Cornell College.

The regionally-ranked Knights (6-1-0) came into contest hot off their first home conference win of the season against Gustavus Adolphus, and they continued their offensive outburst from the day before. The hosts fired 31 shots on Sunday against Cornell (1-6-1), with 14 of those on goal. While the visiting goalkeeper tandem managed nine saves, the Knights' attack proved too much.

The scoring began in the 15th minute after Carleton had already managed to fire off eight shots. Rainey Tilley (Sr./South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) found home on the ninth Knights shot of the game, thanks to an assist by Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School). The Rams answered back on a long range strike from defender Sanne Croes less than ten minutes later. It would take until the 39th minute when the Knights finally converted their second score, as Dylan Baker (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Breck) collected her first collegiate goal on the eventual game-winner.

The second half was more of the same for the home side. Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) sent in a cross from the left wing, assisting Kresse in the 52nd minute. Patterson found Baker in the 75th minute, her second assist while Baker picked up the brace. In the 84th minute, Piper Dean (So./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) found the head of Anna Borkowski (Fy./South Bend, Ind./John Adams) on a beautiful set piece from over 30 yards out. The goal was the first of Borkowski's collegiate career.

Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tallied three saves en route to her sixth win of the season in as many appearances.

Carleton's 31 shots tied the fourth-highest total in program history, last achieved on Sept. 25, 2010 vs. Hamline.

As for the weekend in aggregate, eight different Knights scored, with four first-years seeing their first career goal find the back of the net. The last time Carleton scored five or more goals in back-to-back games was in 2019, with a 5-1 victory over Grinnell (Sept. 8) that was followed by a 5-0 shutout over UW-Stout (Sept. 14). The last and only time the feat occurred on consecutive days was Sept. 9-10, 2000, with a 5-1 win against UW-River Falls and an 11-0 triumph over Buena Vista.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton has six days to recover after the busy weekend before trekking to Moorhead to take on Concordia College for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 24.
