Knights take down Gusties in offensive onslaught

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Following a win to open the conference schedule, the Carleton College women's soccer team continued its hot start, netting three first-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College.

Carleton (5-1-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) opened the scoring in the first minute of the contest. Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) played a beautiful ball to Hadley Twichell (Fy./Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) through the Gusties' (4-2-1, 1-1-0 MIAC) back line and the first-year had no issue converting the one-timer. The goal was Twichell's fourth of the season and gave her a share of the conference lead in goals scored alongside MacVeagh. Only eight minutes later, MacVeagh reclaimed her spot alone atop said leaderboard, blasting a shot into the upper-left corner of the net after a Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) shot was turned away.

Carleton's third goal of the affair was a beauty. Loren Arzayus (So./Houston, Texas/Lutheran South Academy) saw the Gustavus keeper a bit off her line and ripped a shot from over thirty yards out that grazed the keeper's fingertips and found the net in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, it was the usual suspects for Carleton. In the 51st minute Twichell fed MacVeagh a ball through the back line, who converted for her second of the game and conference-leading sixth goal of the season. In the 73rd minute, Patterson beat three Gustavus defenders at the top of the box and finally got a shot on goal, a laser into the netting.

Carleton conceded in the 89th minute on a set piece that bounced too early for Keya Mookencherry (So./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) to come out for, and Magan Geraets got a foot to the ball first to score Gustavus' lone goal of the afternoon.

Carleton finished with a 21-8 edge in shots.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton turns around for their second game in 24 hours. Fortunately, it comes without a bus ride for the Knights as Cornell College comes to Bell Field for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 18.
