Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights soar past Cardinals in MIAC lid lifter

WINONA, Minn. – Second-half goals by Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) and Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) lifted the Carleton College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Saint Mary's University in the conference opener for both squads.

"Tonight's win was definitely a team effort both during the game and beforehand, in training," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "Saint Mary's is an athletic team and can be tough to defend. We stayed really organized, and Keya Mookencherry came up with two big time saves in the second half. We moved the ball well and, most importantly, we battled. Our training environment has been really competitive, and everyone on the team contributes to that."

Carleton (4-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) outshot the hosts 6-1 during a scoreless first half. The Knights finished with a 13-5 edge in shots, including 8-2 in shot on goal.

Kresse broke the deadlock with her second goal of the season. In the 67th minute, the Knights earned a free kick from 35 yards out that was into the wall. Kresse pounced on the loose ball and immediately fired into the net. Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) was credited with the assist.

Mookencherry had two stops in registering her second straight shutout, and both came in the 72nd minute.

Patterson then clinched the victory with a beautiful long-range tally in the 90th minute. She collected a loose ball, spun, and smashed a 35-yard laser into the upper corner of the goal. It was her first score of the season and the 13th of her career.

Saint Mary's dropped to 2-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the MIAC.
