Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Knights season draws to a close with loss at No 16 Gustavus in MIAC Playoffs Final

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team saw its season end with a 5-0 loss at No. 16-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the finals of the MIAC Playoffs. This marked the 12th time in the last 15 years that these programs met in the conference tournament championship match to determine the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Carleton finished the season 15-6 overall, with all six losses coming against regionally-ranked competition.

"I am proud of the way we fought to the very end," said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. "Thanks to the fine group of gentlemen on this team who represented Carleton in the best possible light throughout this challenging season."

Gustavus (24-10) swept the doubles matches on Satruday, prevailing by scores of 8-4, 8-3, and 8-2 at the first, second, and third slots, respectively. The Gusties added straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to clinch the match.

Tarm Rojanasoonthon (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) won the first set at No. 1 singles, 6-3, and led in the second set 3-2 when play was halted. He finished the season 15-2 atop the singles lineup for the Knights.

Seniors Xander Roti (Sr./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) and Bence Kisgeczi (Sr./Budapest, Hungary/Szent István) were both ahead in the second set when play was halted. The former was 15-3 in singles in 2022 as the scoreboard for No. 3 singles read 4-6, 4-3 when the decision was reached. Kisgeczi bounced back after dropping the first set 6-1 at No. 6 singles, and led 2-1 in the second set.

Before play stopped, Aswath Viswanathan (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) trailed 6-4, 4-3 in a tightly-contest battle at No. 5 singles.

This result brings down the curtain on the collegiate careers for the three seniors on the Carleton roster: Roti, Kisgeczi, and William Walsh (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights), who missed the last week and a half of the season due to injury.
