MINENAPOLIS – The Carleton College baseball team lost twice at Augsburg University on Tuesday, despite another strong game one showing by
Kiefer Lord (So./San Carlos, Calif./Menlo School). The sophomore righthander collected 12 strikeouts over 6.0 innings, giving him 81 K's on the season, the highest recorded figure in program history. Unfortunately, the Knights offense was stymied by the Auggie pitching staff in absorbing defeats by scores of 1-0 and 5-0.
Game 1 Recap
When Augsburg (14-21, 6-12 MIAC) scored in the fourth inning, it was the first run that Lord had yielded since the conference opener three-and-a-half week ago. He finished off his MIAC-leading fifth complete game of the season and lowered his MIAC-best ERA to 1.65. He surrendered only three hits—all singles—with no walks and the dozen K's, his fourth double-digit strikeout performance in seven standard starts this season.
Lord had multiple strikeouts in four of his six innings on the mound, including striking out the side in the first and fifth frames.
With 81 strikeouts on the season, he moved past Tony LePage and into first place on the Knights' single-season leaderboard (see chart below).
Auggie righthander Jake Skogrand limited Carleton (9-20, 6-10 MIAC) to only three hits as well, singles by
Asher Stolberg (Fy./Sherman Oaks, Calif./Campbell Hall),
Paul Hinton (Sr./Omaha, Neb./Millard West), and
Cayten Gardner (Sr./Claremont, Calif./Claremont).
Game 2 Recap
Ryan Antrim (So./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) took the loss after tossing a career-best 5.0 innings, allowing only two earned runs on six hits. His previous career high was a 2.1-inning effort back on March 10.
Austin Jerylo pitched 7.0 innings for Augsburg and earned his MIAC-best seventh win if the season. His teammates scored twice in the second inning and added single tallies in the fourth, seventh, and eighth frames.
Hinton singled in the opening frame, giving him at least one base hit in 23 of 28 games this season. His .407 season average is sixth in the MIAC, and he continues to be the toughest player to strikeout across all of NCAA baseball (Division I, II, and III) with only one strikeout in 108 at bats.
Aaron Berkowitz (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School),
James Sassi (Sr./Stamford, Conn./Brunswick School),
Jacob Small (Sr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), and
Sam Schur (Sr./Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint) also had singles for Carleton.

With four games remaining in the regular season, Carleton is still alive in the playoff hunt, but the team heads into a likely must-sweep situation when the Knights visit Concordia College-Moorhead on Thursday, May 5. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
