Madison Collins ties career doubles mark as Knights swept at No. 11 Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Madison Collins (Sr./Elmhurst, Ill./York) tied the program record for career doubles, but the Carleton College softball team lost a pair of games at No. 11-ranked Bethel University, falling 7-0 and 7-1.

Game 1 Recap
The Knights (18-15, 7-5 MIAC) had runners aboard but could not break through against Bethel ace Kayla Simacek, the reigning national pitcher of the week. Carleton stranded runners at second base in the first, third, and seventh innings.

The Royals (28-3, 17-1 MIAC) scored five times with two out in the bottom of the first inning. Carleton went to the bullpen and Hala Soliman (Jr./Harrisburg, N.C./Lake Norman Charter) responded with 5.0 innings of two-run ball.

Amy Chen (So./Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington), Helen Moses (So./Denver, Colo./Denver East), Brooke McKelvey (Sr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn), and Cassie Cunniff (Jr./Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) had the hits for Carleton as Simacek improved to 26-2 on the season.

Angela Dabu did the bulk of the damage for Bethel, contributing a two-run single in the first inning and a two-run double in the third.

Game 2 Recap
Carleton scored in the top of the first inning as McKelvey singled, stole second base, and scored on Collins bunt. Bethel answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, and another in the second inning.

The hosts tacked on a total of four two-out runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined.

McKelvey had two more hits in this contest, extending her hitting streak to 15 games. Her .500 batting average ranks second in the MIAC this season.

Collins double in the sixth inning was her 16th of the season, one behind Natalie Maurice '20 for the highest recorded total in program history. Collins moved into a tie with Maurice and Katie Eppard '18 atop Carleton's career doubles list. (see charts below)

Morgan Arnold (Fy./Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) pitched a career-best 6.0 innings and allowed only three earned runs to a Bethel squad that is batting .344 on the season.
