SARTELL, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team used a sweep in singles and picked up an 8-1 triumph over host Saint John's University on Sunday. That result clinched the Knights' spot in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs, the team's 15th consecutive trip to the conference tournament.
Carleton (12-5, 6-1 MIAC) held a 2-1 lead after doubles. The tandems of
Aswath Viswanathan (Jr./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and
William Walsh (Sr./San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) as well as sophomores
Yuv Kataria (Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) and
Aniketh Vipparla (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) notched 8-3 triumphs at the second and third slots in the doubles lineup.
Rookies
Tate Fuller (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) and
Tarm Rojanasoonthon (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Chulalongkorn) nearly made it a sweep but lost in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, 8-7 (7-4).
In singles, the Knights won the top five matches in straight sets, including shutouts by Fuller and
Viswanathan at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
" I have not seen that sort of focused energy from Ozzie since he lost his AirPods," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel.
Rojanasoonthon, Kataria, and
Xander Roti (Sr./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) also had two-set triumphs, while
Noah Mueller (Jr./Dubai, UAE/German International School Dubai) claimed a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 win to finish the day.
