Game Recap: Softball |

Knights unable to tame Wildcat bats, absorb two losses

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team spent much of the day playing from behind and was swept by St. Catherine University, 6-3 and 11-5.

Game 1 Recap
The Knights (16-9, 4-6 MIAC) were limited to only four hits by St. Catherine ace Alyssa Montero, who improved to 9-4 on the season.

The Wildcats scored twice in the top of the first, but Carleton answered with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame via RBI hits by Bryanna Schaffer (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Mar Vista) and Madison Collins (Sr./Elmhurst, Ill./York).

The visitors scored two more times in the third inning, only to see the Knights get one of those runs back on an infield single in the home half of the stanza.

Montero, who also went 3-for-3 with three  RBI, settled in and held Carleton to one hit over the last four frames while the Wildcats added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Game 2 Recap
St Kate's touched Carleton pitchers for 11 runs on 23 hits, the most hits allowed by the Knights in at least 19 seasons. Six Wildcats had at least three hits in the contest. The bulk of the damage came during a four-run second inning and five-run fourth inning.

Trailing 9-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Carleton kept the game going with a RBI groundout by Ella Collins (Fy./Ashburn, Va./Riverside) and a two-run, two-out pinch single by Faith Hanshaw (Jr./The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Acad.).

The Knighs tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Brooke McKelvey (Sr./West Linn, Ore./West Linn) was 2-for-4, giving her a team-best three hits on the day. Hanshaw delivered a three RBI despite not being in the starting lineup.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to cross-town rival St. Olaf College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 (start time moved up due to weather forecast) then returns home to host Augsburg University at the same time on Sunday, April 24.
