Kiefer Lord collects 15 K’s in 1-0 win over St. Olaf; Knights drop game two in extra innings

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Sophomore Kiefer Lord (San Carlos, Calif./Menlo School) dominated while pitching the Carleton College baseball team to a 1-0 victory over rival St. Olaf College in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Knights rallied late to tie the second game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth before play was suspended due to darkness. When the game resumed a week later, St. Olaf scored a run in the 11th inning and salvaged a split with the 4-3 result.

This marked Carleton's first game action in nine days, and due to CoVID protocols it was the first time the two Northfield rivals played since April 23, 2019, a span of 1,092 days.

"Everyone was excited to be back on the ballfield after an extended layoff," said Carleton head coach Aaron Rushing, "and we had a nice team performance today. We managed some clutch hitting, outstanding defense, and had two great starting efforts on the mound. While it was disappointing to not be able to finish game two, there are a ton of positives as we get into the heart of the conference season."

Game 1 Recap
The Knights (5-12, 2-3 MIAC) prevailed in a pitchers' duel as Lord mowed through the St. Olaf (8-11, 2-5 MIAC) lineup. He matched his career high with 15 strikeouts (out of 21 total outs) while tossing at least 7.0 shutout frames for the third time this season. He surrendered three hits and two walks.

Lord paces the MIAC with 59 strikeouts this season with an astounding 15.17 K/9 ratio. His 2022 strikeout total is already tied for third highest in recorded team history (see chart below but keep in mind that there are numerous season totals that are unavailable).

St. Olaf (8-11, 2-5 MIAC) had base hits to open each of the first three innings—including a triple in the third frame—but each time Lord came back to strike out the side and keep the Oles off the scoreboard.

He then fanned the first two batters in the fourth frame, which means his first 11 outs were K's. After a two-out error later that inning, Lord set down the last 10 Ole batters in a row to finish off his second shutout of the season. He is now 3-0 while lowering his ERA to 2.06.

St. Olaf's Hunter Barber did his best to match Lord. He struck out the first two batters he faced on the day before Jacob Small (Sr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), Paul Hinton (Sr./Omaha, Neb./Millard West), and Sam Schur (Sr./Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint) strung together three consecutive two-out singles to account for the game's lone run. The Knights managed only three more hits the rest of the contest.

Small went 3-for-3 in collecting half of Carleton's hits.

Game 2 Recap
AJ Staff (Jr./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) limited the Oles to an unearned run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over his 7.0 innings of work.

The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Asher Stolberg (Fy./Sherman Oaks, Calif./Campbell Hall) singled, stole second, and advanced to third on James Sassi's (Sr./Stamford, Conn./Brunswick School) base knock. The duo pulled of a double steal with Stolberg swiping home for the first Carleton run. Aaron Rice (Fy./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy) later singled home Sassi with the other run.

The first St. Olaf tally came without the benefit of a hit in the top of the sixth inning. Brian Nevin reached second on a throwing error, advanced to third on a groundout and scored via a wild pitch. The visitors scored two more unearned runs in the eighth before Ben Jeweler (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Garfield) escaped a bases-loaded jam.

St. Olaf carried the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Sassi delivered a two-out RBI single to level the score. However, before the game could head to extra innings, the umpires halted play due to darkness.

The game was completed a week later. After both teams went down 1-2-3 in the 10th inning, the Oles took advantage of a leadoff walk to score the tie-breaking run. In the bottom of the frame, Asher Stolberg (Fy./Sherman Oaks, Calif./Campbell Hall) singled with one out, but the Knights were unable to put together another late rally.
