Bats slow to awake in 7-2 loss at C-M-S

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Carleton College baseball team bats were stymied early on, and the Knights never recovered in a 7-2 setback against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Knights were held to six hits—all singles.

The Stags (11-9) scored three runs in the second inning—including a two-run home run by Marco Castillo—and two more in the third frame. The hosts tacked on single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings.

Meanwhile, Carleton (3-7) did not get a runner past second base until scoring both of its runs in the seventh inning without the benefit of a hit. With one out, the Knights loaded the bases on walks to Jacob Smith (Sr./McKinleyville, Calif./McKinleyville) and Aaron Berkowitz (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) sandwiched around Steve Antrim (So./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) getting hit by a pitch.

Aaron Rice (Fy./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy) chased home the first run with a RBI groundout, and after Sam Zacks (Fy./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) was also plunked, Sam Schur (Sr./Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint) drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Antrim.

Paul Hinton (Sr./Omaha, Neb./Millard West) collected two of Carleton's half-dozen hits.

Henry Connell hurled 6.0 shutout frames for C-M-S in notching his first win. AJ Staff (Jr./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) tossed a career-high 7.0 innings for Carleton.
