Kiefer Lord tosses another gem, but No. 21 Chapman rallies for walkoff win

ORANGE, Calif. – The Carleton College baseball team absorbed a 3-1 loss at No. 21-ranked Chapman University on Sunday as Josh Phillips hit a two-out, two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Panthers. Carleton starting pitcher Kiefer Lord (So./San Carlos, Calif./Menlo School) turned in another spectacular effort, holding the Panthers to only two singles through 7.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and a walk in what became a no-decision.

Over three outings on the young season—two regular starts and a 1.0-inning appearance on what would typically have been a bullpen day—the Carleton ace has totaled 15.0 shutout innings with 27 strikeouts.

"Today was a tough one," said Carleton head coach Aaron Rushing. "We did a lot of things well against a great team, but came up just short. Kiefer had another great start, and we played good defense all day. Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives as we move forward. We're looking forward to a practice day tomorrow before competing again on Tuesday."

Lord and Chapman starter Grant Manning locked up in a classic pitcher's duel as they took turns putting "0"s on the scoreboard. Manning permitted only four singles with six strikeouts over his 7.0 frames on the bump.

The Knights (3-4) finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Sam Zacks (Fy./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) singled to right field, and Jacob Small (Sr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) followed with an infield single. Sam Schur (Sr./Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and one out later, Cayten Gardner (Sr./Claremont, Calif./Claremont) singled home the go-ahead run.

Chapman (12-5) leveled the score against the Carleton bullpen, plating a two-out run in the bottom of the eighth.

With two down in the bottom of the ninth, Oli Sellman worked a full-count walk, and Phillips deposited the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall.

Dylan Holt pitched 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win. Zacks took the loss.

Both teams managed only four hits on the day. Zacks had was the only player with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3
