MINNEAPOLIS –
Jacob Small (Sr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and
Cayten Gardner (Sr./Claremont, Calif./Claremont) had three hits apiece as the Carleton College baseball team registered a 10-2 win over UW-Eau Claire on Thursday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Small finished with three runs scored and three RBI, while Gardner scored once and had two RBI. Three other players had multi-hit evenings for Carleton (2-1, 0-0 MIAC).
"It was a total team effort today," said Carleton head coach
Aaron Rushing. "Five pitchers contributed to a strong outing on the mound, we had great at bats up and down the lineup, and we played errorless defense. I'm really pleased with the effort today."
The Knights opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, a frame that included a RBI single for Small and two-run double for Gardner.
UW-Eau Claire (2-1, 0-0 WIAC) pushed across single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, but Carleton answered with three more runs in the top of the sixth inning as
Jacob Smith (Sr./McKinleyville, Calif./McKinleyville) delivered a two-out, two-run double that preceded
Luke Mager's (Jr./Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) RBI single.
After the Knights scored two more times in the seventh inning, they closed the scoring in the ninth.
Aaron Rice (Fy./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy) tripled with one out and scored on Small's third hit of the day.
Sam Schur (Sr./Calabasas, Calif./Viewpoint),
Paul Hinton (Sr./Omaha, Neb./Millard West), and
Steve Antrim (So./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) added two hits apiece for Carleton.
On the mound,
Ben Jeweler (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Garfield) permitted a run over 3.1 frames.
Gabe Keane (Sr./New York, N.Y./Regis) yielded the other run in his 1.1 innings, while
Ryan Antrim (So./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest),
Sam Zacks (Fy./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier), and
David Lee (Fy./San Juan Capistrano, Calif./San Juan Hills) combined for 4.1 scoreless frames of relief.
