ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team kicked off the 2022 portion of the season and improved to 4-0 overall after registering a 7-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire. The Knights nearly completed a sweep of the Blugolds as the two team points earend by UWEC both came via tiebreakers.
In doubles,
Mary Frances Hose (So./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) and
Amelia Asfaw (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) paired for an 8-4 win at the top spot.
Taylor Thulson (Sr./Louisville, Colo./Niwot) and
Miriam Shteyman (Fy./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) notched an 8-3 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Carleton won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets.
Hose continued her fine season with a 6-1, 7-5 win atop the lineup. Asfaw added a dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory from the second slot, and
Mariam Nechiporuk (Fy./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) improved to 4-0 in dual match singles action with her 6-4, 6-2 result at No. 3 singles.
Ingrid Smith (Fy./Edina, Minn./Edina) secured her first singles victory of the season, 6-1 and 7-5 at the No. 5 slot, while
Lingyu Wei (Jr./Shanghai, China/Shanghai Weiyu High School) won her match by a 7-5, 6-2 margin.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will open MIAC play with is first match against the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Feb. 26. That contest will played at the West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center in Owatonna, Minn.
