Knights too much for Saints in 4-0 contest

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Carleton College women's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to 11 games as the Knights dominated on the offensive end en route to a 4-0 home triumph against the College of St. Scholastica.

The Knights (12-1-1, 8-0-1 MIAC) out shot the Saints (2-9-5, 1-5-3 MIAC) by a whopping 24-4 margin, including 11-0 in the second half.

Carleton did not take long to find the back of the net. In the 14th minute, Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) created a chance along the end line, and her first attempt was stopped. The ball continued to bounce around the box before Cate Patterson's (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) shot was saved by Saints' goalkeeper Gracie Meagher. The deflection  rolled over to a wide open Hadley Twichell (Fy./Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), who put away her sixth goal of the season.

Not two minutes later Patterson, in her signature style sent a long-range laser home for her fourth goal of the season, giving  the Knights a 2-0 lead.

In the 38th minute, it was Kresse again in the box, this time earning a penalty kick. Piper Dean (So./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) toed the stripe for the third time in the campaign and continued her perfection in that department, as her third goal of the season gave the Knights their third goal of the game.

With a comfortable 3-0 halftime lead, 26 different field players saw action for Carleton. One of these was Claire Burbery (Fy./Huntington, W.V./Huntington), who came off the bench but started to begin the second half. In the 63rd minute, she fired an unassisted 30-yard rocket into the side netting, giving the Knights a 4-0 lead and Burbery the first tally of her career.

Ezra Kucur (So./Seattle, Wash./University Prep) started her first game in net and earned the clean sheet with a pair of saves.

Carleton still sits atop the MIAC ladder with 28 (of a possible 30) points and will hope to clinch a first-round bye in the upcoming MIAC playoffs as well as the regular season conference title.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton has only two MIAC matches remaining, and both present tough challenges. The first of these is a date with St. Catherine University (10-4-2, 6-2-1 MIAC) with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff in St. Paul, Minn., on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The other will be a Senior Day showdown with current second-place College of Saint Benedict (11-5-0, 7-2-0 MIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
