Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eryk Jones '23

Knights draw 2-2 at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Entering a Sunday matinee affair riding a nine-game winning streak, the Carleton College women's soccer team was unable to capture all three points against a conference opponent for the first time in the 2022 season, drawing 2-2 at Macalester College. That result clinched a home playoff game for Carleton in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.

The Knights (11-1-1, 7-0-1 MIAC) came into play as the lone undefeated team in MIAC play, three points ahead of St. Catherine in the conference ladder. The Scots (7-3-5, 3-2-3 MIAC) were not intimidated by their opponent and struck first on their home turf. In the 16th minute, a ball was punched out of the Carleton box, but a quick strike on the rebound by Mia Brisbin was perfectly placed into the back of the net. Even though they were out shot 8-1 in the first half, the hosts would take their 1-0 lead into intermission.

Carleton would not be turned away, though. The Knights put the pressure on and found the equalizer in the 67th minute. Cate Patterson (Sr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) slipped a through ball past the Macalester back line, connecting with Kathryn Kresse (Fy./Woodside, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) on a run. The first-year took a touch around the Scots' keeper and evened the game with her sixth goal fo the season. Carleton struck again ten minutes later. A Macalester player was booked for a hard challenge, and Casey MacVeagh (Jr./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) hit on a subsequent set piece from 25 yards out.

Macalester only had a few chances in the second half, but they were able to tie the game back up thanks to gritty play. In the 81st minute, the Scots earned their only corner kick of the contest, and a beautiful header from Mikaely Evans was the final score of the contest.

MacVeagh's strike gave her nine goals on the season and 24 points, both ranking in the top ten for individual season efforts in program history. (see below)

The pair of goals for Carleton brought them up to 35 tallies on the campaign in only 13 games played. This season total is already the fourth-most in the program's ledger (see below), and the Knights' 2.69 goals per game is one pace to be the highest mark in Carleton women's soccer history.)
