Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights knock off Cornell, 3-2

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Annette Shumway (Sr./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) tallied the game winner in the 61st minute as the Carleton College Women's Soccer team claimed a 3-2 triumph at Cornell College. It was the Knights' first victory of the season.

Carleton (1-0-1) jumped out to early lead as Casey MacVeagh (So./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) tallied her first career goal in the third minute. After a build up from the back, Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) carried the ball into the attacking third. She fed the ball over to Cate Patterson (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) for a one-touch pass over the defense to MacVeagh, who finished to the far post.

The Knights extended their lead in the 19th minute. Patterson picked up the ball in the center of the field, dribbled around a defender and slotted it to Hurtubise making a run behind the Cornell backline. A calm collection and finish by Hurtubise resulted in her third career goal.

Cornell (1-1-0) leveled the match with goals in the 21st and 28th minute, the second of which was a penalty kick for a foul near the top of the 18-yard box.

Those goals proved to be the Rams' final two shots of the evening as the Carleton defense stiffened, and the Knights out-shot Cornell 15-0 the rest of the way. Overall, Carleton owned a 20-4 advantage in shot attempts, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.

The game winner came after a corner kick. Megan Cablk (Fy./Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) played the ball across the box to an unmarked Shumway, who nailed home a one-timer for her second career goal.

"Once again, I'm so proud of team," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "Every player battled for each other. Our bench was so positive and provided great energy. What a fun night of soccer."

Next up for the Knights
Carleton plays its third match in three different states when the Knights visit University of Wisconsin-Stout for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
