MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Carleton College women's soccer team played University of Wisconsin-Stout to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday. Lightning in the area caused the match to be called as the teams were preparing for the first overtime period.
Cate Patterson's (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) goal in the 87th minute was the equalizer for the Knights.
While Carleton (1-0-2) and UW-Stout (2-0-1) managed only a goal apiece in the contest, the two squads made things interesting by hitting the woodwork with shots three times in the second half.
Shortly before UW-Stout's Hailey Kane scored a 30-yard one-timer in the 54th minute, the Blue Devils were denied by the crossbar.
A shot off the left post helped set up the Knights' late goal. After that shot rebounded out to the left wing, a Blue Devil foul resulted in a penalty kick that Patterson converted for her third goal of the season.
The Knights avoided heartbreak when a UW-Stout free kick clanged off the top of the crossbar in the 89th minute.
Carleton finished with seven shots, three of them on goal, while UW-Stout attempted eight shots but only one was on target.
