Crossbar unkind as Knights fall 2-1 to Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team saw its three-match win streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to visiting Augsburg University on Wednesday.

The Knights (5-2-2, 2-2-0 MIAC) out-shot the visitors 13-5 and had two first-half opportunities clang off the woodwork. Augsburg (5-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) survived those near goals then scored once in each half to secure the Auggies' first road win of the campaign.

Annette Shumway (Sr./Arlington, Va./Yorktown) stole the ball in the midfield and sprung Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) for a scoring chance in the 23rd minute. Augsburg goalkeeper Iz Schuster came off her line and got a piece of Hurtubise's shot, deflecting it off the crossbar and out of play.

After Augsburg tallied a header goal in the 31st minute off a corner kick, Shumway's long-range attempt for the equalizer in the 34th minute blasted off the crossbar.

The visitors padded their lead in the 65th minute the MIAC's leading goal scorer Jennifer Bobaric forced a turnover and scored from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Carleton closed the gap in the 73rd minute. Saheli Patel's (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) long-ball sprung Hurtubise for a shot. Augsubrg backup keeper Aspen Brockhouse turned that attempt aside but the ball deflected right to Rainey Tilley (Jr./South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) for a shot into the now empty net.

The Knights pushed hard for the tying goal over the final 17 minutes, but Augsburg was able to secure the victory.
