NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team absorbed its first home loss in nearly four years as the Knights came up short 1-0 in a double overtime contest against Augsburg University. It was Carleton's first setback at Bell Field since losing 1-0 to Concordia-Moorhead on Sept. 30, 2017. The Knights had gone 21-0-6 over their previous 27 home contests.
Tuesday afternoon's contest was set up to be a great game from the start, as the two teams entered the day undefeated in conference action and comprised two-thirds of a tie atop the MIAC standings.
Carleton (5-2-2, 3-1-0 MIAC) had chances throughout the contest. The Knights owned a 19-12 edge in shots—including 5-2 in the overtime periods—an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, and 57 percent of the possession time against an undefeated Auggies (9-0-0, 4-0-0 MIAC) squad which has now posted six consecutive shutouts. The shot total for Carleton included four apiece from
Trevor Jones (Jr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) and
Tarek Bos-Shadi (Sr./Kankakee, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais).
There were plenty of other promising chances for the Knights as well. That group included but was not limited to
Tonny Aton's (Sr./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) had a shot just off target in the 22nd minute, Bos-Shadi's open shot that sailed outside of the goal frame in the 101st minute, and
Marco da Cunha's (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) strike in the 105th minute that was deflect inches outside the left post.
Augsburg seemed to be playing for the counter-attack all afternoon, and it was in the 108th minute when Kobby Owu rain onto a long ball, dribbled through two Carleton defenders and found Tomas Piza-Gonzalez for the eventual game winner.
