NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Carleton College women's tennis team dispatched Southwest Minnesota State University, a NCAA Division II program, by a 7-2 tally on Saturday.
Amelia Asfaw (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep),
Mariam Nechiporuk (Fy./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego), and
Lingyu Wei (Jr./Shanghai, China/Shanghai Weiyu High School) each won in both singles and doubles.
Carleton (2-0) grabbed the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Amanda Black (Fy./Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Nechiporuk started off with an 8-2 win at second doubles, followed by Wei and Asfaw registering an 8-4 result atop the lineup.
Upon moving to singles, the Knights quickly closed out the match with five straight-set triumphs.
Alise Pedersen (Jr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) contributed a 6-0, 6-1 score followed shortly by Wei's 6-0, 6-2 victory. Nechiporuk clinched the match for Carleton thanks to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at second singles. Asfaw secured a 6-1, 6-4 result atop the singles assignments, while
Taylor Thulson (Sr./Louisville, Colo./Niwot) battled to a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Meanwhile, at the ITA Midwest Regional in Whitewater, Wis.,
Mary Frances Hose (So./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) won twice on Saturday to advance to the tournament quarterfinals. Hose has dropped only four games over her first three matches at this event.
Hose will play Simona Potockova of Gustavus in the quarterfinals slated for 9:00am on Sunday with the victor of that match advancing to face either Kimmy Steinert of UW-La Crosse or Irene Agusti of Grinnell in the semifinals which are scheduled for 12:00 pm.
Up Next for the Knights
The next team match for Carleton will be on Saturday, Oct. 2 when the squad hosts another NCAA Division II program. This time the opponent will be Minnesota State-Mankato.
