PELLA, Iowa – Host Central College scored with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to prevail 1-0 and hand the Carleton College men's soccer team its first loss of the season.
Game time temperatures were near 90 degrees and may have played a factor as the match wore on. The Knights (4-1-2) were playing their second match in as many days, while the Dutch (2-3-0) were playing their first contest in eight days.
Carleton finished the day with a 12-8 advantage in shots—including 8-3 in shots on goal—to go along with a 7-4 edge in corner kicks and 56 percent of the possession time. Despite leading several categories on the stat sheet, the Knights were unable to knock one past Central goalkeeper John Foster.
Arguably the most dangerous of those shots on goal was a
Marco da Cunha (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) laser off the crossbar in the 17th minute.
With 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Carleton earned a free kick from the top edge of the box, and
Trevor Jones (Jr./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) bent his shot around the wall, but Foster made a sprawling save to re-direct the ball just outside the left post.
In the 90th minute, a cross in from the left was headed farther to the right and Zach Worster played hero for the Dutch faithful, putting the low shot into the back of the net.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will be back at Bell Field at 12:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 25 as they get back into the MIAC schedule and host Concordia College-Moorhead.
