ST. PETER, Minn. –
Casey MacVeagh (So./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) and
Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) both had a goal and an assist as the Carleton College women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory at Gustavus Adolphus College.
After getting shut out for the first time this season in dropping the MIAC opener on Tuesday, the Knights (3-1-2, 1-1-0 MIAC) grabbed the lead on their first shot in this one. Hurtubise sent a through ball that MacVeagh ran onto at the top of the box. MacVeagh touched the ball around a defender and the charging Gustavus (3-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) goalkeeper for a shot into the open net.
The score remained 1-0 for much of the match, in part due to the work of Carleton goalie
Keya Mookencherry (Fy./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), who made her first collegiate start and registered eight saves.
Carleton tallied an insurance goal in the 79th minute.
Cate Patterson (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) sent a long ball over the Gustavus defense, and MacVeagh immediately headed it over to a cutting Hurtubise for a one-timer into the left side of the net.
Gustavus owned a 14-5 edge in shots, and Mookencherry made a sprawling save in the 87th minute to preserve the clean sheet.
"A great team effort today, especially defensively," said Carleton head coach
Jessica Mueller. "At times, Gustavus was throwing seven and eight players forward, which we were prepared for, but it's never easy to stay organized for 90 minutes. Keya did really well for us in goal and made a couple of big time saves. Plus a number of younger players gave us some solid minutes."
