Tarek Bos-Shadi delivers game-winner as Knights best No. 18 Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The senior duo of Marco da Cunha (/San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) and Tarek Bos-Shadi (Sr./Kankakee, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) tallied goals as the Carleton College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 road victory at No. 18-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College.

This was a battle between two programs that are regular participants in the postseason, and the Knights (4-0-2, 2-0-0 MIAC) came away with three big points in the standings.

The Gusties (4-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) registered more possession time than the Knights, and took the early lead after All-American Cole Schwartz put one in the back of the net in the 20th minute. Carleton goalkeeper Alexei Thomas (Jr./Northwood, United Kingdom/Merchant Taylors School) turned aside a sliding shot from Ethan Miller, but Schwartz was in position to head home the rebound.

Carleton fought back, and in the 34th minute da Cunha—the Knights own All-American—knotted things up with a hockey-like goal off an assist by Trevor Jones (Jr./Urbandale Iowa/Waukee).

Jones provided the momentum for the equalizer, ripping a 22-yard shot that was headed toward the left side of the goal, but da Cunha re-directed the ball up and back in the upper right side of the net past the stunned Gustavus goalkeeper. It was da Cunha's team-best fourth goal of the season and the 22nd goal of his career, moving him up to a tie for ninth place in the Carleton record books in points with 55 (22 goals and 11 assists).

In the 59th minute, it was Bos-Shadi scoring an unassisted goal to give the Knights a lead they would not relinquish. He collected a deflected clearance attempt by the Gustavus back line and buried a one-timer into the right side of the net for his second straight game-winning goal.

Gustavus outshot Carleton 18-10 on the afternoon and looked for the tying tally over the remainder of the contest, but Thomas registered a career-best 12 saves—including six during the final 15 minutes of play—in helping the Knights stay undefeated on the season.

Up Next For the Knights
Carleton will head down to Pella, Iowa for a non-conference date with the Central College Dutch at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19.
