NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Cate Patterson (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) scored twice as the Carleton College women's soccer team opened the 2021 campaign with a 2-2 draw against Macalester College. The teams played this one as a non-conference affair, with the conference contest slated for Oct. 16.
This was the first game in 22 months for Carleton (0-0-1), which saw its 2020 campaign wiped out by COVID-19. The Knights were aggressive throughout and owned a lopsided 26-4 advantage in shots and tallied nine corner kicks in the contest.
Patterson opened the scoring with a long-range goal in the ninth minute.
Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) chased down a ball along the end line and found her teammate unmarked at the edge of the box. Patterson took a settling touch then tucked a shot over the goalkeeper and under the crossbar.
Macalester (0-0-1) leveled the contest in the 19th minute when Sarah Hamilton ran onto a loose ball, dribbled around a defender, and opted for a 26-yard shot that tucked into the left side of the net.
The Scots moved in front in the 56th minute when Lucy Grochulska scored. With her back to the ball, she settled up a bouncing ball in the box and spun to deposit the ball in the lower right side.
Carleton kept the pressure on and was rewarded in the 71st moment. Hurtubise passed the ball to the right wing, and after a dribble across the top of the box, Patterson rocket found the opposite upper 90.
The Knights owned a 13-1 edge in shots over the remainder of the contest but were unable to break the deadlock.
Quote from Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller
"I'm so proud of this group. Macalester is a well-coached, very organized team, and they are tough to break down. I thought we moved the ball really well and created a number of quality goal-scoring chances.
"I'm happy with how we played as well as the effort and courage displayed all over the field tonight.
"We need to sharpen our game in the attacking third a bit, and we have to be better with 1v1 defending. It was too easy to beat us on the dribble near our own goal."
