Knights settle for 1-1 draw at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Carleton College men's soccer team traveled to Whitworth University for the 2021 season lid-lifter. The Knights led for much of the contest but were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw (2 OT) after the Pirates converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Carleton (0-0-1) got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute. Jon Fernandes (So./Woodbury, Conn./Canterbury School) sent a long ball into the box and found Jeremiah Lanzillo (Fy./Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) unmarked. The rookie took a settling touch and blasted a shot into the lower right corner before the Whitworth defense could react.

The Knights owned a 5-1 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes, but Whitworth out-shot the visitors 13-7 over the remainder of the game.

The hosts caught a break with less than four minutes remaining when a handball resulted in the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Jonathan Guglielmetti converted the golden opportunity, resulting in a draw in the first-ever meeting between these programs.

Alexei Thomas (Jr./Northwood, United Kingdom/Merchant Taylors School) had three saves in the game, including the lone stop by either team in overtime, while Whitworth goalie Bo Broyles stopped two shots.
