Late lead slips away as Knights fall 6-3 to Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team saw its 3-1 eighth-inning lead evaporate as Macalester College rallied for a 6-3 victory in the finale of the squad's weekend series.

After the two sides combined for 42 runs in a pair of games on Saturday, the bats were a little slower to get going in this one. Macalester (7-16, 7-16 MIAC) broke what had been a scoreless deadlock with a two-out run in the top of the fourth inning.

Vince Cone (Jr./New York, N.Y./Trinity School NYC) doubled home the tying run for Carleton (4-16, 2-16 MIAC) in the bottom of the fifth, and the Knights moved in front when James Sassi (Jr./Stamford, Conn./Brunswick School) singled home Jacob Smith (Jr./McKinleyville, Calif./McKinleyville) an inning later.

The Scots threatened to tie things up in the top of the seventh when Athony Palma hit a leadoff triple, but Carleton southpaw Travis Brown (Sr./St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) made a dazzling play to pounce on a batted ball in front of the mound and flip the ball to catcher Aaron Berkowitz (So./Leawood, Kan./Pembroke Hill School) in time to tag out Palma trying to score.

Carleton tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Jacob Small's (Jr./Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) second hit of the day plated Berkowitz from second base.

Macalester took advantage of two errors in the top of the eighth to score three times and chase Brown from the game. The Scots tacked on two more runs in the ninth, including a pinch hit solo homer for Leonardo Bucello.

Trailing 6-3 heading into its final turn at bat, Carleton looked for a late rally of its own. Berkowitz was hit by a pitch and Cone worked a walk, but the top of the Knights' lineup could not pick up the critical hit.

Brown dipped to 0-3 on the season despite pitching a career-best 7.1 innings. He was charged with four runs (three earned)on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Louis Silverman retired the only batter he faced and picked up the victory. Declan Elias worked the final 2.0 innings for the save.
