COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – With four players winning in both singles and doubles, the Carleton College men's tennis team knocked off Saint John's University, 8-1, and secured a berth in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.
The Knights (6-1, 5-1 MIAC) raced out to a big lead by sweeping the three doubles matches.
Leo Vithoontien (Sr./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and
Yuv Kataria (Fy./Kolkata, India/Weil Academy & College Prep) cruised to an 8-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles, while the tandem of
Aniketh Vipparla (Fy./Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and
Aswath Viswanathan (So./Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) won 8-6 at the second slot to improve to 6-0 this season.
"Like a pair of British royals in an interview with Oprah, Ozzie and Aniketh can cause a lot of problems for the MIAC establishment," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel.
The duo of
Noah Mueller (So./Dubai, UAE/German International School Dubai) and
Xander Roti (Jr./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) also prevailed by an 8-6 tally at No. 3 doubles.
Upon moving to singles, the Knights captured the first five matches to finish.
Viswanathan blanked his opponent at No. 5 singles, 6-0 and 6-0.
Will Stepanski (So./Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park) contributed a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles, and Vithoontien added another victory to his career ledger, this one a 6-4, 6-3 result at No. 1 singles.
Kataria remains undefeated in MIAC singles action following his 6-3, 6-2 result at the third spot in the order, and Vipparla returned to the win column with his 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
