Jeweler’s gem leads Knights to sweep of Martin Luther

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Ben Jeweler (So./Seattle, Wash./Garfield) collected a career-best 14 strikeouts over 6.0 innings of one-run ball in game one and sparked the Carleton College baseball team to an 8-1 and 11-3 sweep of visiting Martin Luther College.

"It was another great day on the diamond," said Carleton head coach Aaron Rushing, "and nice to get on the right side of the scoreboard, while getting a lot of guys some opportunities.

"We had three guys get their first collegiate hits, and had a great game one outing from Ben Jeweler. It'll be fun to see these guys keep developing. Hopefully we can bring some of this energy into our series with Gustavus."

GAME 1 RECAP
Jeweler struck out the first batter he faced and never looked back in earning his first collegiate victory. He fanned at least two batters in each of his 6.0 innings, including fanning the side in the third and fifth frames. Jeweler allowed four hits and a walk. His 14 strikeouts are tied for second-most in the MIAC this season and are the most by a Carleton hurler since Matt Stamets (Sr./Bloomington, Ill./University) fanned 16 batters on May 3, 2018.

Luke Mager (So./Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) singled, stole second, and scored on Blake Anderson's (Sr./Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) single in the bottom of the first.

After Martin Luther (0-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the third, Carleton (2-5) pushed three runs across in the bottom of the stanza, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Alec Kotler (Jr./Chicago, Ill./Latin School of Chicago) and a RBI single by Jacob Smith (Jr./McKinleyville, Calif./McKinleyville).

Travis Brown (Sr./St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) added a two-run triple in the fifth inning ahead of Steve Antrim's (Fy./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) sacrifice fly.

Jeweler's previous career high was a 2.0-inning relief stint earlier this season, so he eventually gave way to senior Dan Clipper (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), who tossed a scoreless seventh to finish out the game.

GAME 2 RECAP
Carleton carried the momentum from game one over to the second contest and scored six times in the bottom of the first inning, a frame highlighted by Vince Cone's (Jr./New York, N.Y./Trinity School NYC) two-run double.

Brayden Stark (Fy./Los Angeles, Calif./The Buckley School) tripled home a run in the fourth, while Mager and Thomas Wolf (Fy./Chatham, N.J./Pingry) added RBI singles. Stamets contributed a sacrifice fly an inning later, and the final Carleton run came via back-to-back doubles by Antrim and Brown in the sixth.

Wolf, Michael Berler (So./San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School), and Aaron Thorne (Fy./Dallas, Texas St./Mark's) notched their first collegiate hits in the contest.

Cayten Gardner (Jr./Claremont, Calif./Claremont) surrendered three runs but fanned six over 5.0 innings of work for his first win of the season. Ryan Antrim (Fy./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and Braden Sebesta (So./Spring, Texas/John Cooper School) followed with scoreless frames out of the pen.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS
Carleton hosts Gustavus Adolphus College for a twin bill on Saturday, April 17 followed by the conclusion to the three-game set on Sunday, April 18.
