ST. PETER, Minn. –
Aiana Whitfield (Jr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) had a team-best 21 points and
Jasmine Choi (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) added 10 points, but the Carleton College women's basketball team had no answer for hot shooting by host Gustavus Adolphus College in a 76-50 road loss.
Gustavus (4-1, 3-0 MIAC) did not just get off to a strong start, it got off to a perfect start. The Gusties went 9-of-9 from the field, including an impressive 5-for-5 from 3-point range plus 6-for-6 at the free-throw line en route to a 29-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The hosts followed up that performance by shooting 69 percent in the second quarter to build a 53-27 advantage by halftime and putting the game out of reach.
The Gusties shot 35 percent in the second half, but the damage was already done. Anna Sanders paced the hosts with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Whitfield notched her second consecutive and third career 20-point performance. She went 7-of-13 from the field with three assists and three steals. Choi made 5-of-7 shots for her third double-digit showing of the season.
