NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team (7-2-2, 4-2-0 MIAC) won for the fifth time in six games, defeating visiting Bethel University by a 3-1 score.
Coach
Jessica Mueller wanted to focus on finishing chances, and especially doing so early, and her team did just that. With exactly 10:00 off the clock in the first half,
Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) timed her run perfectly and scored on an assist from
Cate Patterson (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School).
Less than seven minutes later, Patterson again was looking for one of her teammates, sending a cross towards the far post. However, the ball floated over the head of the Bethel goalkeeper, and inside the post right for what would be the eventual game-winning goal.
Carleton's attacking chances came one after the other, and in the 38th minute
Thea Traw (Fy./Portland, Ore./Catlin Gabel) headed in the Knights' third goal of the half.
Carleton's chances continued after intermission, with a 10-4 advantage in shots during the second half. However, Bethel goalkeeper Izzy Smith kept the Knights from adding to their scoring total during the second stanza, racking up five of her eight saves over the final 45 minutes.
Bethel centerback Abby Swanda accounted for Bethel's only goal with a beautiful shot from more than 30 yards out in the 60th minute.
Carleton goalkeeper
Keya Mookencherry (Fy./Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tallied two saves and picked up her fourth win of the season in net.
