ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team dominated on the stat sheet but came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 score as the Knights saw their win streak snapped with a setback at Hamline University.
"Played well, tons of chances to score," said Carleton head coach
Jessica Mueller. "We made one error in the back, and Hamline capitalized on it. We have to have a short memory. We have a number of games yet this season, and we're looking forward to finishing strong."
Carleton (7-3-2, 4-3-0 MIAC) out-shot Hamline (6-5-1, 2-4-1 MIAC) by a whopping 28-4 margin and owned a 14-2 edge in shots on goal. The former figure was a season-high for the Knights while the latter equaled their largest total of the fall.
With the game remaining scoreless thanks to the performance of Hamline goalkeeper Lauren Sicora (14 saves), both teams were itching to break the tie. In the 88th minute, the Knights tried to quickly pass the ball up the field from the back, but it found the foot of Piper midfielder Emily Hillis, who was able to put the ball in net from range with the keeper off her line, giving the Pipers the late win.
For the Knights, a trio of players registered five or more shots:
Cate Patterson (Jr./Racine, Wis./Prairie School),
Annette Shumway (Sr./Arlington, Va./Yorktown), and
Casey MacVeagh (So./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) had seven, six, and five shots respectively. Five other Knights contributed to the shot total as well. The 28 shots were good for 13th place in program history, a feat not accomplished since Sept. 9, 2017, when Carleton had 29 shots in a 6-1 victory against the University of Northwestern-St. Paul.
