Knights fall 2-0 to No. 25 St. Kate's in final home game of the year

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - In its final home game of the season, the Carleton College women's soccer team fell to No. 25-ranked St. Catherine University. The Knights put up a good fight, but the conference-leading Wildcats were simply too much.

A sunny but windy Bell Field was the site of the action, which began when St. Kate's (11-1-3, 8-1-1 MIAC) fired three shots in the first five minutes towards the Carleton (7-5-3, 4-5-1 MIAC) net. The visitors would find home in the 13th minute after a ball ricocheted around the six yard box to the feet of Mandy Elton, who scored easily with the mayhem in the box. After putting up 71 shots in their last three games, it took the Knights until the 24th minute to get their first of this match, and until the 43rd minute to put such a chance put on goal.

With the game in the Wildcats' advantage 1-0 at halftime, the Knights shifted to a more offensive formation during the second half. Carleton thought it had the equalizer courtesy of Megan Cablk (Fy./Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) off of a corner kick in the 67th minute, but it was called back. While the Knights were not finished, that chance was the best they would get on the day.

Elton's second goal of the game put St. Kate's in a comfortable position up 2-0 in the 74th minute, and that score would hold until the final whistle.

The Wildcats led 14-7 in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal. For the Knights, it was the final home game of the year for the five seniors on the roster: Bella Bettner (Sr./DeKalb , Ill./DeKalb), Jimena Dominguez (Sr./Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty), Brie Forster (Sr./Northfield, Minn./Northfield), Lily Hurtubise (Sr./Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron), and Annette Shumway (Sr./Arlington, Va./Yorktown).

While the loss officially puts Carleton out of reach of a home game in the MIAC playoffs, the Knights still sit tied with Macalester College for the final playoff spot. The Scots host Saint Mary's on Wednesday before traveling to face Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton travels to College of St. Benedict for the regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 3:30pm.
