ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team saw its hopes of repeating as MIAC Playoff champions extinguished with a 3-0 semifinal defeat at University of St. Thomas on Wednesday.
"A disappointing result today," said Carleton head coach
Bob Carlson. "St. Thomas played really well. Our guys battled valiantly and can hold their heads high.
"That said this result can't take away from the accomplishment of the senior class and the accomplishments of this season. The future is bright, and the players will use this to fuel them in the offseason."
Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Knights (14-5-1) found themselves in an early hole. The Tommies' (12-3-3) George Marty scored the opening goal off of a counter-attack only 39 seconds into the match
Halvor Houg added an insurance goal for the hosts in the 28th minute when he converted from the penalty spot and sent the home team into intermission with a lead it would not relinquish.
Carleton built repeated offensive attacks throughout the match but were unable to knock the ball past St. Thomas goalkeeper Troy Louwagie.
Houg finalized the score line, scoring another penalty-kick goal in the 65th minute.
With 14 wins on the season, Carleton tied for the sixth-highest win total in program history.
This match represented the final collegiate game for the three Carleton seniors:
Kamran Kelly (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central),
Bryan Kim (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), and
Spencer Weeden (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton). This trio will graduate as one of the most successful classes in school history, having qualified for the MIAC Playoffs all four seasons, accumulating 49 career wins, posting a .679 winning percentage (49-21-8 overall), and leaving the program with an active 23-game unbeaten streak (18-0-5) at Bell Field.
