ST. PAUL, Minn. –
Anna Roethler (Jr./St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) made six saves, including a diving stop in the second overtime, to help the Carleton College women's soccer team secure a 0-0 draw with No. 20-ranked University of St. Thomas.
Carleton (7-2-2, 4-1-1 MIAC) played without forward
Nora Mertz (Sr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), the No. 4 scorer in program history, who missed the contest in order to participate in a geology class trip.
"We played great soccer the first 45 minutes," said Carleton head coach
Jocelyn Keller. "We possessed and kept the ball in the Tommies' defensive half for he the majority of the first half. We created a couple of scoring opportunities, which was the goal.
"We missed Nora due to an academic obligation, but it's always motivating to rally as a team to step up when needed. We focused on the positives today, and it showed up in our fight.
"St. Thomas took it to us second half, put up a great fight, and dominated in the air. Overtime was more even, and the Knights were in it to the 110th minute. I'm excited for how the team has been training and their focus on what is ahead."
Two of the stingiest defenses in the MIAC stayed organized throughout the contest and limited scoring opportunities for much of the day. St. Thomas (7-2-2, 3-1-1) eventually produced a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Cate Patterson (Fy./Racine, Wis./Prairie School) led Carleton with three shots on the afternoon, with two of them requiring St. Thomas keeper Sarah Pasternak to make saves.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton, which now sits in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings, hosts Saint Mary's University for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Live video and stats will be available via athletics.carleton.edu.
