NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Abby Loe (Jr./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) recorded a career-best 23 kills, her fourth consecutive double-figure kill total, to lead the Carleton College volleyball team to a thrilling four-set win (22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19) over Hamline University Wednesday evening at West Gym. The match marked Carleton's Faculty Appreciation Night, numerous Carleton faculty were honored prior to the start of the match.
Loe, who entered the match ranked sixth among MIAC players with a 3.47 kills per set average during conference contests, also added 14 digs to register her fourth double-double of the season. The 23 kills mark the highest total reached by a Carleton player since Lucy Stevens '17 recorded 26 at St. Catherine in a five-set match on Sept. 28, 2016. Loe's 23-kill total mark the most kills recorded by a Knights in a four-set match since Stevens had 27 against UW-River Falls on Sept. 26, 2015.
Carleton (6-16, 2-5 MIAC) dominated at the net in this one, as the Knights hit .394, easily surpassing their previous MIAC-best .297 from earlier this season. Carleton recorded 11 total team blocks compared to three for Hamline (12-11, 2-5 MIAC).
The opening set featured five ties and three lead changes. A kill by setter
Inger Shelton (So./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) gave Carleton an 18-17 lead late in the set and forced a Piper timeout, but the Knights were unable to maintain their lead as Hamline went on to capture set one, 25-22.
Carleton started to click in the second game, as the Knights jumped ahead early to take control of the set. A block from first-year
Jancyn Appel (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill), one of five she recorded during the match, gave Carleton its largest lead at 22-14. The Knights would go on to close the set out a few points later to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set featured some of the Knights' best play of the season to the delight of the fans in attendance at West Gym. Trailing 18-11 late in the set, Carleton won 14 out of the ensuing 19 points, capped off by a kill from Loe—her 19th of the evening—to earn a thrilling 25-23 set win and 2-1 match lead.
The Knights carried the momentum into the fourth set, as a kill by Appel early in the set gave Carleton a 7-6 lead. The Knights never trailed again and secured a 25-19 set win and match victory.
Grace Leuchtenberger (Jr./Newton, Mass./Newton South) chipped in with 10 kills, her fourth double-digit kill total of the season, while
Olivia Powell (Sr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) added nine kills and a team-high seven blocks.
Appel added nine kills as well to go along with her five blocks.
Celeste Chen (Sr./Yorba Linda, Calif,/Valencia) recorded a season-best 24 digs to lead all participants.
Shelton led the Knights with 47 assists and 12 digs, which marked her seventh double-double of the season.
UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton hits the road for two MIAC contests this weekend, first at College of Saint Benedict at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, followed by a 3 p.m. match at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Oct. 26.
