Carleton College opened the 2008 season with a 7-0 triumph over Lawrence University. The Knights scored three times in a three-minute span midway through the first half to break a scoreless game open. Senior Nicky Bloom (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and first-year Cassie Burke (Sunfish Lake, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) both tallied three goals to lead the hosts.

Not quite three minutes after entering as a substitution, Burke scored off a one-touch pass from Melley Turner (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy), who scored Carleton’s second goal less than a minute later off a header. Burke found the back of the net again 61 seconds later.

Bloom scored her trio of goals in quick succession to open the second half, with assists going to Turner and Mia Zutz (Jr./Middleton, Wis.).

The Knights’ final score came in the 76th minute as Burke found the back of the net off a long pass from Sophie Wood (Sr./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest).

Goalkeeper Yusi He (Sr./South Pasadena, Calif.) was forced to only make one save in recording the shutout.

Carleton will be back on the pitch on Sunday afternoon when the Knights host Lake Forest College at 2 p.m.
